As you know, the 9th “Arrupe dollar” (or “Arrupe euro” in Europe) campaign has been launched this year as in previous years on February 5th, the anniversary death of Father Pedro Arrupe.
At the beginning of this year, our eyes and our hearts are turned at first to Haiti and always to Africa …
In 2009, the association has collected, through the “dollar (or euro) arrupe “ campaign 12.926 euros as donations from Jesuit alumni and associations (we are very grateful to them), which are regrettably exclusively from Europe and still too few: of course we wish they will be in the future many more in order to give to the association (” the World Union social arm”) financial means that would be better suited to the needs of a global solidarity action. The association was able to support two programs, the one in Cambodia (to allow poor students to pursue higher education), the other one in Nairobi (Kenya) (in association with the African Jesuit AIDS network) , for a grand total of 12.047 euros.
As participation in emergency aid in Haiti, a first urgent aid of 2.500 euros has been sent by the association to the Canada Province of which depend Jesuit communities of Haiti: these communities have made a wonderful work on the spot in favour of the so distressed populations (for more information, please consult the web site of the Canada Province and Haiti (http://www.jesuites.org/tremblement_de_terre_haiti.htm)… We hope that the association will commit too to support in the future the reconstruction programs which the Jesuits are thinking of… And after the world Congress of Bujumbura, and the strong intentions and resolutions shown by the participants, we hope the association will be able to also make more in favour of Africa, especially by widening our help to young alumni/ae of different continents which would be desirous to devote some part of their time to an African experiment…
Please keep in mind this point: that these ambitious goals for a worldwide solidarity action are exclusively depending on our generosity and our desire to work together as a group!
